A Novel Asymmetric Synthesis of 2-Azetidinones from Achiral Precursors.

-Cyclocondensation of chloride (I) with p-methoxybenzylamine in the presence of stoichiometric amounts of a chiral salen-copper(II) is investigated. The desired azetidinone (III) is obtained with considerable enantioselectivity. Small amounts of (IV) as well as the coumarin (V) are also identified.
