A New Approach to the Protection of 1,2-Diols.

-An easy access to the corresponding thionocarbonate-type derivatives, and, in sequence, to the methylene-type derivatives is presented, starting from cyclic and acyclic cis-diols by use of the thiocarbonyl compound (II), and the selective reducing agent Ph3SnH. The cleavage of the acetonide protective group is studied with respect to the stability of the thionocarbonate moiety under the most commonly used conditions. -(DE
