The first part of tl~.is book describes a chemical processing plant at Idaho, which recovers fissile material etc. from reactor fuel elements; this is a particular plant for the processing of various test and experimental reactors in the U.S.A. There is an account of the facilities, equipment, and process provided for uranium recovery from enriched uranium-aluminium fuels; the equipment described is adaptable to the processing of other types of fuels. The plant is the first A.E.C. processing facility designed for direct rather than remote maintenance. There is a good description of the procedures for plant decontamination which is a necessity for the successful operation of this type of maintenance. The operations of fuel alloy dissolution; extraction and back-extraction of uranium nitrate from the feed solution using methyl iso-butyl ketone (hexone); product and waste handling; and solvent recovery are described with the aid of block diagrams and flow sheets. In addition, the geographical and architectural layout of the plant, special and mechanical equipment, instrumentation, analytical and health physics control, and the relative proportions of different costs are included.
The remainder (80 %) of the book is devoted to a description of many items of apparatus and equipment which have been developed for special uses in laboratories handling highly radioactive materials. Remote handling methods of performing common operations are well to the fore. This volume will be of particular value to chemists and chemical engineers concerned with the desigfl and provision of research and development facilities for radiochemical operations connected with isotopic production or nuclear power reactors.
