✦ Synopsis

Chemical regulation of transgene expression presents a powerful tool for basic research in plant biology and biotechnological applications. Various chemical-inducible systems based on de-repression, activation and inactivation of the target gene have been described. The utility of inducible promoters has been successfully demonstrated by the development of a marker-free transformation system and largescale gene profiling. In addition, field applications appear to be promising through the use of registered agrochemicals (e.g. RH5992) as inducers.

Translational regulation plays a major role in plant gene expression. Recent advances have been made in understanding how this mechanism of control is directed in the chloroplast as well as in the cytoplasm. Our knowledge of translational regulation in plant mitochondria, however, is limited. Transl

Of the wide variety of regulatory systems that have been developed to control gene expression in higher eukaryotes, those utilizing elements from prokaryotic systems presently achieve the highest specificity. In particular, systems based on the repressor/operator elements of an Escherichia coil tetr
