✦ Synopsis

The hydroxy end-groups of poly(ethyleneglyco1) polymers PEG lo00 and 4000) were derivatized by etherification using methyl, ethyl and triphenylmethyl (trityl) halogenides. During the derivatization the molecular mass distribution of monoand disubstituted polymers as well as unsubstituted polymers could be obtained by means of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDYMS). For the first time MALDYMS was used to investigate the kinetics of a chemical reaction involving synthetic polymers.
