Ion production resulting from excitation of K atoms to m *P (nz a 6) levels has be& observed in mixtures of K with various species. ?&S-S spcctromclric data provide direct eiridence for the dccurrence of K(m *P) + K(4 2s) 2~ Kz + e-and are consistent with the formation of unstable KX+ ions from K(r?r *P) + X + KXT+ e-for X = &Hi, CH4, Nz.'
