A single beam Z-Scan technique is used to characterize the nonlinear optical properties of Cr^3+^-doped lanthanum-magnesium hexa-aluminate LaMgAl~11~O~19~ with c.w. laser radiation at 514.5 nm. The real part __n'__ ~2~ = 2.6 ร 10^-8^ cm^2^/W and the imaginary part __n''__ ~2~ = - 1.1 ร 10^-9^ cm^2
