We have isolated cDNA clones representing mRNAs encoding chitinase and 1,3-fl-glucanase in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) leaves. The chitinase clones were sequenced and found to encode a 28,806 Da protein with 71% amino acid sequence similarity to the SK2 chitinase from potato (Solanum tuberosum).

A type 2 metallothionein-like gene from rice, OsMT-2 (Oryza sativa metallothionein-like gene-2), was isolated in its cDNA form and sequenced. By northern analyses OsMT-2 expression was shown to be induced under stress by sucrose starvation, heat shock and, to a lesser extent, abscisic acid, but not

lntracellular thiols have been proposed as mediators of resistance to alkylating agents and cisplatin. As metallothionein is the predominant protein thiol, we examined its relationship to cisplatin resistance in human ovarian cancer cell lines. A human ovarian carcinoma cell line, A2780, derived fro

Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) are freshwater mollusks that have recently infested the Great Lakes ecosystem. Possessing a large capacity for filtration, these mussel populations act as bioconcentrators for contaminants, such as heavy metals, found in the Great Lakes ecosystem. Metallothionein
