The uptake of a variety of physiological di- and oligopeptides by germinating barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) embryos is described. Peptides as large as pentaalanine can be absorbed. Evidence is presented suggesting the peptides are absorbed intact and subsequently undergo rapid intracellular hydrolysis
