โฆ Synopsis
Neutron
diffraction is now being applied to determine residual stress and strain distributions nondestructively in engineering components.
For the information to be of engineering relevance it is necessary that the results represent bulk behaviour.
Neutron diffractibn measurements of lattice strain have been made on samples of a nickel base superalloy which have been loaded in the elastic region and taken to just beyond yield. Strains were recorded on different crystal planes, parallel and perpendicular to the loading direction.
Comparisons have been made with resistance strain gauge data. It has been found that care should be adopted in selecting the crystallographic orientation, on which to make neutron diffraction measurements, for the information to be of use in engineering calculations.
