In serum, nerve growth factor (NGF) forms a complex with a,-macroglobulin (a2M), which formation inhibits the immunoreactivity between NGF and its antibodies. For measuring the serum level of NGF, it is thus necessary to liberate NGF from the NGF-a2M complex and prevent reformation of such complex.

Serum human hepatocyte growth factor levels were measured using a newly developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit in patients with liver diseases. Serum human hepatocyte growth factor levels were increased in correlation with derangements of prothrombin time, total bilirubin and other paramete
