Active coke and activated carbons, made from preoxidized bituminous coal, are used as catalysts for the removal of NO, from flue gases by ammonia. The activity of different catalysts is influenced by the specific internal surface only to a small degree. The activity of a carbon catalyst depends on conditions of production such as carbonization temperature, bum-off and incorporation of heteroatoms in the carbon structure. The development of basic structural units influences the activity of carbonaceous catalysts and the reactivity of the coal. It can be measured indirectly by the total reflection distribution.
