lnJbrmation-systems managers have embraced one or more of a number of software engineering techniques over the last 15 years in their search for a development approach that guarantees a quality product with a minimum of ef[ortfrom developers; the latest of these approaches is computer-aided software engineering (CASE) tools. The paper discusses CASE tools, looks at the inJbrmation-systems track record with software engineering principles, and suggests four rules for successful implementation of CA SE: implement sound methods and techniques first, develop a clear statement of requirements before acquiring CASE tools, ensure that there is management commitment, and provide adequate initial and ongoing training.
