Under normal conditions, there is always some oxygen chemisorbed on the surface of diamond. More oxygen is bound after treatment with 0, at 400Β°C or with oxidizing solutions, e.g. of NaOCl or (N,H),S,Os, at room temperature. The diamond surface turns hydrophilic during this treatment. A fraction of
