β¦ Synopsis
Under normal conditions, there is always some oxygen chemisorbed on the surface of diamond. More oxygen is bound after treatment with 0, at 400Β°C or with oxidizing solutions, e.g. of NaOCl or (N,H),S,Os, at room temperature. The diamond surface turns hydrophilic during this treatment. A fraction of the oxygen is bound in form of carboxyl groups. No tertiary hydroxyl groups were detected. The oxygen content agrees very well with the amount of fluorine or chlorine chemisorbed under similar conditions. A hydride surface is,obtained by treatment with H, at 800Β°C. The concentration of unpaired electrons is low in comparison ; they seem to be located in the surface, however. Oxidation was studied thermogravi- metrically and by gas analysis. Conversion of diamond into black carbon at low 0, pressures as described by Evans and Phaal has also been observed. An explanation of this phenomenon is attempted.
