✦ Synopsis

To date, about twenty 9, IO-dihydrophenanthrene derivatives have been isolated from nature. Although 9, IO-dihydrophenanthrenes have been known ' for over a decade, most of the members of this group of compounds have been isolated 2-5 in recent years. Many of these compounds are phytoalexins6 and one of them, iuncusol (l),is highly cytotoxic.
