It is postulated that the collision-induced singlet-triplet transition of methylene involves coupling between the electronic orbital angular momenta of the inert catalyst and +he electron spins of methytene. A theory which incorporates this mechanism is presented and partialty tested.
The sin$ct-triplet absorption spectra of truns-azo-methane, truns-azo-ethane, trawls-azo-n-propane, and trans-azo-isopropane have been measured using the technique of oxygen perturbation. It was found that the triplet level lies 55.5 + 1.5 kcal mole-' above the ground state in these compounds. These
