brittle fracture criterion for structures with sharp notches is proposed. It is based on Irwin's and Novozhilov's criteria and states that a crack will propagate from a tip of a notch when the actual value of the stress intensity factor K,,,,,,,, reaches a critical value. The considerations were carried out within the limits of linear elastic analysis and based on the general expressions for the stress distribution in the vicinity of the notch-tip. The parameters required to estimate the brittle fracture hazard can be easily obtained from experiments.

Based on the combined micro-and macro fracture mechanics, the two requisites necessary for the crack propagation, that is, the energy unstable requisite and the critical local stress requisite, are derived for the low-stress brittle fracture of notched specimens. Thus the fracture criterion was obta
A stochastic fracture criterion is derived for a brittle body with a population of crack-like defects under an arbitrary triaxial load. It is shown that due to the stochastic nature of the material resistance and defect characteristics, the probabilistic approach allows for the possibility of a crac
