โฆ Synopsis
A stochastic fracture criterion is derived for a brittle body with a population of crack-like defects under an arbitrary triaxial load. It is shown that due to the stochastic nature of the material resistance and defect characteristics, the probabilistic approach allows for the possibility of a crack spreading in an arbitrary direction, provided the crack extension force overcomes the material resistance. The Lamon and Evans approach is used to present the stress intensity factor in two-dimensional formulation in the three-dimensional stress field. Limiting fracture surfaces were obtained for uniform distribution of the defects and found to differ from their counterparts according to the maximum stress and Von Mises criteria. It was also shown that the limiting surfaces for a lower reliability level envelope their counterparts for a higher reliability level. Hence, the more stringent the reliability requirements, the lower the predicted strength for all combinations of triaxial stresses.
