✦ Synopsis

The Brewster angle concept is generalized to elastic wave reflection from fluid-solid interfaces. For wave incidence from the fluid side, as there can be no incident or reflected SV wave, the Brewster angle is defined as the incident angle for which there is no reflection. It is proved that, in the sense of Snell's law, the Brewster angle is independent of the medium containing the incident wave(s), which, for incidence from the solid side are the P and SV waves. Regions of Brewster angle(s) are discussed in respect to fluid-solid properties. Numerical examples show the potential of Brewster angle reflection for industrial applications.

The scattering of incident plane elastic, or fluid, body waves and interfacial waves by an arbitrarily orientated subsurface crack is considered. The crack lies in an infinite elastic half-space that is coupled to an overlying fluid half-space. Material parameters relevant for water-metal and water-
