β¦ Synopsis
We investigate the effect of boundary conditions on the bulk polarization of an electronic ferroelectric. Criteria are established for the existence of a spontaneous dipole moment in samples terminated by open-and short-circuited electrodes. It is shown that boundary effects do not have a deleterious effect on achieving electronic ferroelectricity.
