The title compound, [Co~2~(HO~3~PCH~2~CH~2~COO)~2~(C~10~H~8~N~2~)~2~(H~2~O)~2~], was obtained by a hydrothermal method. Two six-coordinate cobalt(II) ions are linked by two 2-carboxyethylphosphonate ligands, forming a centrosymmetric dimer. The dimers are further interlinked by O—H...O hydrogen bond
