✦ Synopsis

The biosynthesis of the tetrahydropyranyl side chain of verucopeptin (1) in cultures of Actinomadura verrucosospora was investigated. Incorporation experiments using 13C-labeled acetate and propionate, followed by analysis of the labeled metabolite by NMR, revealed that the tetrahydropyranyl side chain of I is derived from three acetate and five propionate units. A biosynthetic scheme consistent with the observed labeling patterns has been proposed.
