Coffee pulp, traditionally considered a highly polluting waste, is evaluated for its potential as biogas substrate via anaerobic digestion. The fibrous nature of the material required long retention times.

Coffee processing in Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela is done by the wet process or wet "beneficlo". During the preparatory steps, the coffee berry is mechanically squeezed to separate the bean from the skin (or peel) and the mesocarp. These last two elements are generically known as pulp. It is generally discharged as a highly polluting waste Rolz et al., 1980).

## Methanogenic bioreactors packed with polyurethane foams were used for the conversion of acidified coffee pulp juice into a methane-rich biogas. Gas productivities of the order of 3 v/v day were obtained with loads ranging from 9 to 22 kg VS/m3 day.
