โฆ Synopsis
(\mathrm{Bi}{1.7} \mathrm{~V}{8} \mathrm{O}{16}) was synthesized by high temperature solid state reaction between (\mathrm{Bi}{2} \mathrm{O}{3}, \mathrm{~V}{2} \mathrm{O}{5}), and (\mathrm{V}{2} \mathrm{O}{3}). The compound crystallizes with tetragonal symmetry, space group (I 4 / \mathrm{m}). The structure refinement using single crystal data confirms that the compound belongs to the hollandite family. It is the first hollandite-type compound containing bismuth in the large tunnels of the (\mathrm{V}{8} \mathrm{O}{16}) framework. The bismuth atom forms a very flat (\mathrm{BiO}{4}) square pyramid with the skeleton oxygen atoms. (\mathrm{Bi}{1.7} \mathrm{~V}{8} \mathrm{O}{16}) is oxidized to (\mathrm{BiVO}{4}) and (\mathrm{V}{2} \mathrm{O}{5}) at (400^{\circ} \mathrm{C}) in air, as evidenced by TGA and DSC.
