Abstract
After feeding rats with small quantities of phytol for 4 days the synthesis of fatty acids and the oxidation of acetate in liver slices have been studied with the aid of 1 ‐^14^C labelled acetate. Phytol caused a marked increase in the oxidation of acetate and a reduced synthesis of fatty acids. A “fasting effect” was excluded by estimations of glycogen in the livers, the control of food‐consumption and body weight. Tocopherol given in the place of phytol did not show the same effect. Evidently there is no splitting of the C‐bound side chain. Thus our former observations of a lipotropic effect of the phytol have been confirmed and extended.
