The anti-apoptotic members of the Bcl-2 family, such as Bcl-2 and Bcl-XL, play a central role in preventing the induction of apoptosis via the intrinsic apoptotic pathway. It has been previously shown that induction of apoptosis by the pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 family member Bok is not antagonized by eith

β¦ Synopsis
Abstract
Bclβ2 family members are the arbiters of mitochondrial apoptotic pathway, which is conserved through evolution. The stoichiometry of proβ versus antiapoptotic Bclβ2 family members in the cell determines whether the cell lives or dies. This fine balance is regulated at the transcriptional or posttranslational level in response to various cellular cues. These signals are transmitted through the upstream molecules in the pathway, that is, the BH3βonly molecules that results in the activation of the adaptor molecules, Bax and Bak, at the mitochondrial surface ensuing mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis. Understanding the activation process offers a great potential in the therapeutic intervention of many diseases such as cancer and autoimmune disorders. Β© 2008 IUBMB IUBMB Life, 60(6): 390β397, 2008

## Abstract ## Objective Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) synovial hyperplasia is related in part to a resistance to apoptosis exhibited by fibroblastβlike synoviocytes (FLS). Since hypoxia is a regulator of apoptosis, and since RA synovium is hypoxic, we conducted this study to examine the effects of hy
## Abstract ## Background This study evaluates whether taurolidine, a novel antibiotic agent, induces murine melanoma cell apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. ## Methods Murine melanoma cells (B16 4A5 and B16 F10) were treated with taurolidine (0β100 Β΅M) for 12 and 24 hr. Cell viability and apoptosi
## Abstract An increase in the permeability of the outer mitochondrial membrane is central to apoptotic cell death, since it leads to the release of several apoptogenic factors, such as cytochrome c and Smac/Diablo, into the cytoplasm that activate downstream death programs. During apoptosis, the m
The expression of the pro-apoptotic proteins (Bax, Bak) and anti-apoptotic proteins (Bcl-2, Bcl-X, Mcl-1) was studied by immunohistochemistry in 110 invasive ductal breast carcinomas. The results were correlated with tumour grade, expression of oestrogen receptor (ER) and p53 protein, and the apopto
