β¦ Synopsis
Bacterial motility was evaluated as a potential tool for the rapid assay of the toxicity of chemicals to microorganisms. The level of toxicity was evaluated by the chemical concentration which caused a 50% reduction in motile bacteria at the 60 s of exposure to toxicants. Assay results showed a good correlation with those obtained from a conventional growth inhibition test.

The in vitro motility assay is used to measure speed of actin filaments moving over a glass surface coated with heavy meromyosin. In this paper a new method, the path reconstruction method, is presented to evaluate observed speeds. The method is compared with the commonly used centroid method, in wh
A new method that utilizes the scattering of polarized light from a suspension of bacteria to assay the effect of toxins is evaluated. The method compares the time dependence of changes in an angular scattering pattern obtained from a suspension of Escherichia coli bacteria with no toxin exposure to
This study evaluated the use of Nothobranchius guentheri as a novel organism for rapid acute toxicity screening. A major advantage of the species is that there is no need to maintain a continuous culture to have organisms immediately available for testing. Rather, the embryos are viable under long-t
