A new compound of the composition Ba 4 Si 3 Br 2 was obtained by reacting BaSi with a melt of BaBr 2 . Ba 4 Si 3 Br 2 may be described as a double salt between a Zintl phase and a halide. The structure was determined by singlecrystal X-ray diffraction (P2 1 c, a 1504.1(2), b 884.5(1), c 880.2(1) pm,

โฆ Synopsis
Reacting Ba 2 X (X โซุโฌ Si, Ge) with a melt of BaI 2 , new compounds of the composition Ba 3 I 2 X were found. These are the simplest representatives of double salts between Zintl phases and halides. The isotypic structures were re5ned by single-crystal X-ray data (Fddd, a โซุโฌ 10.057(2), b โซุโฌ 14.064(3), c โซุโฌ 29.526(4) A s , R/R w โซุโฌ 0.04/0.07 for X โซุโฌ Si, and a โซุโฌ 10.064(2), b โซุโฌ 14.082(2), c โซุโฌ 29.605(4) A s , R/R w โซุโฌ 0.03/0.07 for X โซุโฌ Ge). Magnetic measurements show Ba 3 I 2 Si to be diamagnetic with a mol susceptibility of 7.7ุ10 ุ5 cm 3 /mol. This is in accordance with conductivity measurements and LMTO band structure calculations which show a semiconducting behavior with an electronic band gap of about 0.4 eV.
