✦ Synopsis

After the previous two successful rotifer symposia (see review Int. Revue ges. Hydrobiol. 63 19781: 840; 66 [1981]: 776), is was decided to make it a tradition every third year. Some topics would be selected in advance. The topic chosen for the Uppsala symposium was marine rotifers, but subjects previously treated were also included. The 40 contributions were assigned to six sections: Taxonomy and Evolution, with discussions by C. RICCI "Rotifera or Rotatoria?"-Rotifera by CUTTER, 1798, is the correct term-and by L. A. KUTIKOVA on pardlelism in the evolution of rotifers. Five papers deal with Geographical Distribution; six with Culturing and Related Methods; four with Biochemistry and Aging. The largest part concerns Laboratory andField Studies. I n his contribution, H. J. DUMONT discusses the biogeography of rotifers in light of general biogeographical concepts. He shows that vicariance can develop well in this group. Examples selected from the Brachionidae illustrate the high levels of endemicity found in Australia. The section also includes
