โœฆ Synopsis

It has been found that higher excited states, populated by two-photon absorption, ionize with an effkiency which, in the energy range of 5.3-6.4 eV, is independent of the energy of the excitation. This behavior is similar to that observed in sequential twostep excitation (exciton photoionization) and indicates that the higher excited states rapidly relax to a lower-lying state which autoionizes, irrespective of the mode of excitation. Results of improved measurements of exciton photoionization are also presented.

We report the two-photon fluorescence excitation spectrum of poly(pphenylenevinylene) over the energy range 1.1-2.0 eV. The onset for two-photon fluorescence excitation is at 1.3 eV with a strong peak near I.475 eV. The peak locates the energy of the lowest even parity excited singlet at 2.95 eV, so
