โฆ Synopsis
Dear sirs, Kvaslen, Neel and Tondeur in the recent paper, Chem. Engna Sci. d&1191-1204 (1985x have in a footnote on p. t 195 misstated a theorem that I derived several years ago and reoentfy published [Ckm. Engng Common. 41, 267-275 (1986)3. The theorem states that if the matrix A is positive semidetkite and B is self-adjoin& then the products AR and BA have only real eigenvaiues and have a compJete set of eigenvectors, implying the property of 'diagonabihty" sought by Rvaslen et of. The matrix M in question iu the paper by Kvasleu et al. is the product of the Positive de&&e matrices, G, and the inverse of G* Thus, Dr. h4. F. Doherty was correct in asserting that my theorem assured that M can be diagonafized and that it has only real eigenvalues. However, Kvaslen et at. did not state the hypotheses of the theorem correctfy.
