✦ Synopsis

Principal component analysis was used to investigate the spatial distribution of rainfall anomalies in the Fiji Islands. Two components accounted for about 80% of the variance of annual, wet season and dry season rainfalls. Stations were grouped into homogenous areas on the basis of these analyses. Statistically significant relationships were shown to exist between the rainfall anomalies in the dry zone and an index of the Southern Oscillation. These relationships developed six months before the start of the rainy season, making seasonal forecasts possible.
