Informed by a labelling theory perspective, the authors examine the difficulties in diagnosing depression in elderly persons. Two popular diagnostic tools, the DSM-111 and depression scales, are used to illustrate the value judgements, theoretical biases, and insensitivity to geriatric norms that un
