## Abstract A constant slow rhythm of contraction and relaxation has been discovered in the extensor tibiae (jumping muscle) of saltatory orthopterans. The rhythm is present in the intact insect and persist in the isolated leg, but is abolished when the leg is perfused with saline. The amplitudes a
