Abstract

A constant slow rhythm of contraction and relaxation has been discovered in the extensor tibiae (jumping muscle) of saltatory orthopterans. The rhythm is present in the intact insect and persist in the isolated leg, but is abolished when the leg is perfused with saline. The amplitudes and durations of contractions and also the intervals between them, are subject to central nervous modulation. The rhythm may serve to exercise muscle fibers and to promote movement.

The skeletal muscle is regarded as a periodically deformed plate. An equation of energy for the biological tissue in the system is used in the Lagrange variables. With the heat exchange through the above tissues to the exterior media and also with account of some relations between the physiological
