โœฆ Synopsis

Strains of Bacillus subtilis harboring mutations causing altered migration of one or more of ten ribosomal proteins were used to map the corresponding gene loci. The loci of the genes for proteins BL1, BL5, BL9, and BL11 mapped between cysA and rpoB. The locus of the gene for protein S7 was very close to the gene for protein S12 (rpsL). Those for proteins S8, BL6, BL7, BL8, and BL23 were between rpsL and rpsE (the gene for protein S5). Where the order of loci could be deduced, it was strikingly similar to that of Escherichia coli.

The gene locus of the 30s ribosomal protein S20 of Bacillus subtilis was mapped in the str-region at the right side of S5 gene. The gene order was cysA-str(S12)-ery(50D)-[spc(S5); 50G]-S20-.

A chemically synthesised gene coding for human urogastrone which was earlier cloned in E. coli (Smith et al. 1982) has now been cloned into expression vectors for Bacillus subtilis. Two types of constructs have been made, one giving production of methionyl-urogastrone and the other giving rise to a
