โฆ Synopsis
The results of a full~scale experiment in traffic control in Glasgow show that substantial improvements in journey times are produced by co-ordinating all the traffic signals in the area on fixed time operation. Seven systems of control, b~_sed on computer programs, have been studied and each compared with a standard system. The paper describes the experiment and analyses the results.
The paper was presented at a one-day symposium on Networks, organized by the Computer Aided Design specialist group of the British Computer Society and held on the 18th March 1974.
The Corporation of Glasgow and the Transport and Road Research Laboratory have been carrying out a full-scale experiment on Area Traffic Control in Glasgow since November 1967. The main purpose of the experiment has been to find out whether central co-ordination of traffic signals is worthwhile and if so which systems of control produce the greatest benefits.

An area traffic control network system is considered in this paper. Optimal signal settings can be determined while trip rates and network flow are in equilibrium. This problem can be formulated as a nonlinear mathematical program with equilibrium constraints. For the objective function, the system
