The polymeric structure of the title complex, [Cu(C~7~H~4~ClO~3~)~2~(C~6~H~7~NO)~2~]~__n__~, at 100 (2) K contains two-dimensional sheets parallel to the __ac__ plane. The Cu^II^ atom, lying on an inversion centre, has an octahedral coordination environment. It is bonded in a __trans__-square-planar

✦ Synopsis
In the title complex, [Cu(C~8~H~6~NO~2~)~2~(C~6~H~7~NO)~2~(H~2~O)], the Cu^2+^ ion has a highly distorted square-bipyramidal (4 + 1 + 1) coordination environment, and is bonded to three carboxylate O atoms of two 3-pyridylacrylate anions (monodentate and asymetric bidentate), two pyridine N atoms of 3-pyridylmethanol ligands and one water O atom. O—H...O and O–H...N hydrogen bonds result in the formation of a two-dimensional layer structure.

In the title compound, [Cu(Cl~2~CHCO~2~)~2~(C~6~H~6~N~2~O)~2~(H~2~O)], both the Cu^II^ atom and the O atom of the coordinated water molecule lie on a crystallographic twofold rotation axis. The Cu^II^ atom is coordinated by O atoms from two monodentate chloroacetate anions, pyridine N atoms from two
