A new 23,24-bishomoscalarane sesterterpene (2) was isolated from the northern Adriatic sponge Cacospongia scalaris. The structure was proposed on the basis of spectral data. The absolute stereochemistry was determined using the modified Mosher's method. Compound 2 is the first alkylated scalarane se

β¦ Synopsis
We have previously reported the occurrence of two sesterterpene lactones CL and 2) from two species of the sponge genus Thorecd.
Investigation of eight further species of this diffuse Indo-Pacific genus has revealed five species which do not elaborate sesterterpenes but contain the tryptophan derivative 3, for which we suggest the name aplysinopsin, as a major secondary metabolite.

A new sesquiterpene tetronic acid derivative, named smenotronic acid 2 was isolated from the Red Sea marine sponge Srr~nospongia sp. Its structure was assigned by detailed spectroscopic analysis.
