โœฆ Synopsis

A new 23,24-bishomoscalarane sesterterpene (2) was isolated from the northern Adriatic sponge Cacospongia scalaris. The structure was proposed on the basis of spectral data. The absolute stereochemistry was determined using the modified Mosher's method. Compound 2 is the first alkylated scalarane sesterterpenoid with methylation at C-23, to have been identified in nature.

We have previously reported the occurrence of two sesterterpene lactones CL and 2) from two species of the sponge genus Thorecd. Investigation of eight further species of this diffuse Indo-Pacific genus has revealed five species which do not elaborate sesterterpenes but contain the tryptophan deriv
