A mutated form of the EGF receptor (EGFRvIII), resulting from deletion of exons 2-7, is an oncogenic protein that is expressed in multiple human tumors. This mutation induces ligand-independent activation of the EGFR tyrosine kinase and thereby can initiate unregulated cell growth and tumorigenesis.
