β¦ Synopsis
The magnetic quenching of ortho-positronium (o-Ps) has been studied for a 0.1 M solution of nitrobenzene in isooctane (2,2,4trimethylpentane). Static magnetic fields up to 6.2 kG were applied to the solution and the lifetime of the m=O state of c-Ps was determined as a function of the field strength at 2, 24 and 50Β°C. It was found that the lifetime is decreased to a much greater extent than is expected from the quadratic Zeeman effect, as in the reported case of nitrobenzene in n-hexane. It is suggestedthat particular bound states formed during the attachment-detachment of o-Ps on nitrobenzene in a solution with a low surface tension may be responsible for the anomalous effect.
