✦ Synopsis
In recycle system with selective recycling the material handled is subjected to classification with the consequence that the fraction recycled is different by some of its properties from the fraction representative of such a system. The residence time distribution (RTD) of material in recycle system with selective recycling is given in terms of the number of cycles distribution (NCD) of the system and the RTDs of the units which the system is composed of. The NCD depends on the kinetics by which the classifiable properties of the material change in the system and on classifier performance, while in recycle system without classification the NCD is always geometric distribution. The NCD of a closed-circuit comminution system is derived as an illustration by starting from the classical kinetic model of batch grinding.
