โœฆ Synopsis

Presented is a method of analysis of multi-bay coupled shear walls resting on rigid or elastic foundations. By basing the analysis on the finite difference technique, a closed solution to the problem is achieved. This yields a set of simultaneous finite difference equations. The solution is illustrated by numerical examples.

The ultimate strength analysis of reinforced concrete coupled shear walls with one or two bands of openings requires a two-stage approach. In the first stage, the analysis of the coupling beams is carried out. This is followed by the analysis of the complete wall in the second stage. A simple approa

The stiffness matrix approach has been used to solve frames with or without shear walls. In case of shear walls it is assumed that between the centre line and edge of the shear wall the beam is infinitely rigid. An experimental investigation has been conducted to test the validity of the assumption.

## SUM MARY The continuous medium technique has been widely used in the preliminary analysis and design of coupled shear walls in tall buildings by practising engineers for many years. One of the basic assumptions made when using this approximate method is that the coupling beams deform with point
