A small angle X-ray scattering study on the porosity of anthracites Cohaut, N. e! al. Carbon, 2000, 38, (9), 1391-1400. SAXS technique is applied on anthracites to study their heterogeneous microtexture and the mechanism of partial graphitization during a thermal treatment up to 2800ยฐC. The effects of heat treatment on the porosity were observed at 1600ยฐC and 2800ยฐC and compared with homogeneous microtextures of mesoporous saccharose-based coke and lamellar anthracene-based coke. The main feature observed on raw anthracites, displaying the least degree of natural maturation and the largest isotropic distribution pf aromatic units, is the occurrence of a characteristic distance of 20 A. After a HTT of 1600ยฐC the porosity of anthracites is close to lo-12%. carbon domains still being weakly organized, particularly on raw anthracites with the higher isotropic microtexture.

Discrepancies resulting from the graphitization degree reached at 2800ยฐC were shown using the porosity and the mean length of chord in the matter. The porosity varies respectively from 19%, corresponding to a mean length chord of 97 A for least graphitized anthracites, to 10% and a mean length chord of 235 A for the most graphitized one.

Highly precise and accurate sulphur analyses are required to establish material balance for sulphur in utility boilers where sulphur is present at low levels in the fly ashes. Sulphur determinations using the established methods depend on quantitative extraction of sulphur from some form of sample d

Wavelength-dispersive x-ray fluorescence (WDXRF) was used for the determination of carbon in coal and ash samples. A rhodium side-window tube was used for C Ka excitation and a synthetic multilayer crystal (2d = 12.2 nm) for excited radiation analysis. The samples, undiluted or diluted with boric ac
