✦ Synopsis

Wavelength-dispersive x-ray fluorescence (WDXRF) was used for the determination of carbon in coal and ash samples. A rhodium side-window tube was used for C Ka excitation and a synthetic multilayer crystal (2d = 12.2 nm) for excited radiation analysis. The samples, undiluted or diluted with boric acid, were pressed as layers of 0.16 g cm -2 thickness on to a boric acid support. The relative standard deviation was 1.8, 1.5 and 15% for undiluted, diluted coal and ash, respectively.

## Abstract China has rich reserves of Shenmu coal, which has the typical characteristic of low‐melting‐point ash. If used in the pulverized‐coal boiler of a power plant, Shenmu coal would cause serious slagging. In order to solve the slagging problem of Shenmu coal, the melting mechanism of Shenmu

The N 1s spectra from four pulverized Australian coals and their chars produced by pyrolysis for 2 s at 1100 °C and 1300 °C in a pressurized furnace are evaluated, with particular reference to the binding energy region above 402 eV. The spectra for the feed coals were broadly similar to those report
