## Two-photon resonant three-photon ionization is employed to study the rotational relaxation of NH, in a pulsed supersonic expansion. The different NH, nuclear spin modifications (ortho-para) do not interconvert and relax at different rates. Para relaxation is more efficient than ortho relaxation

โฆ Synopsis
We have investigated the rotational relaxation of NH3 in N&-He supersonic expansions by means of opto-thermal spectroscopy. Molecules are excited in the v,+ Y., band, around 5100 cm-', using the third Stokes line of a Raman-shifted pulsed laser. Rotational distributions are measured for different values of the source stagnation pressure and NH, concentration. At low rotational temperatures, populations deviate fmm a Boltxmann distribution. This is attributed to the reduction of para-to-ortho conversion during the expansion.
