✦ Synopsis

The existence of dynamic temperature control, the good thermal contact between heater and cryostat, the large power dissipated in the heater transistor enable a given temperature to be reached rapidly and for it to be maintained accurately. A temperature stability in the cryostat of not worse than 0.01 K can be achieved with the system, with a time of 5 s for establishing it when the temperature is changed by 10 K and the mass of the copper specimen holder is ~ 30 g.

Operating P215 Ge transistors as heating elements for low temperature cryostats over two years has shown their high reliability for many temperature cycles in the range 77 to 340 K.
