โœฆ Synopsis

This paper presents initial analytical studies of a new method for active interior noise control. The method proposes to control the vibration of segmented trim panels in order to reduce interior noise levels. Since trim panels are often made of light-weight and sti! composite materials, this actuation strategy will enable the creation of active trim panels for interior noise control without using heavy duty structural actuators. The segmentation would provide abilities for both structural sound transmission and active noise control. Numerical studies are performed to demonstrate the e!ectiveness of segmented trim panels as acoustic control sources. Geometrical design considerations are also studied. A comparison of the forces required for suppressing acoustic pressure is made between segmented trim panels and direct actuation on a single-piece trim panel.

A smart trim panel used as a secondary source for active noise control in aircraft is developed and tested. The smart trim panel is a rectangular segment of aircraft trim panel which is suspended by a #exible support. This support converts the sti! trim panel into #exibly mounted pistons which can b
